North Carolina Motor Vehicle Repair Estimate Law

Know Your Rights Before Approving Repairs

Under North Carolina law (§ 20-354.3), when a motor vehicle repair is expected to cost more than $350, customers are entitled to a written repair estimate before any diagnostic or repair work begins. This law is designed to promote transparency and prevent surprise charges.

Key Points:

  • Estimates Required for Work Over $350: The estimate must include parts, labor, diagnostics, teardown, taxes, storage fees, and any other incidental charges.

  • Replaced Parts Option: You have the right to request that replaced parts be returned or inspected.

  • Storage Fees Must Be Disclosed: The shop must inform you in writing of daily vehicle storage charges after your repair is complete.

  • Right to Waive: You may waive your right to a written estimate in writing, either for a specific repair or for a defined period.

  • Drop-Off Exceptions: If you drop off your vehicle outside business hours or repairs require diagnostics first, the shop must notify you of the estimate once diagnostics are complete.
